The Construction For Girls initiative continues to expand its reach across the UK, with Construction For Women recently hosting an inspiring taster day at Croydon College.
The event welcomed 70 schoolgirls from across London, giving them the chance to step inside the world of construction and discover the creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving that shape the built environment.
Introducing the Industry
The day began with a powerful introduction from Renee Preston, Founder of Construction For Women and CEO of Gallaway Construction. Renee shared her personal journey and offered insight into the many directions a career in construction can take — from hands-on site work to leadership, project management, design, and sustainability.
Her message to the students was simple yet impactful: construction is a space for everyone — and there’s a place for you in it.
From Curiosity to Confidence
After the presentation, students took part in a series of interactive workshops across Croydon College’s cutting-edge facilities. Rotating through sessions in electrical installation, plumbing, interior design, joinery, and bricklaying, they gained first-hand experience of the skills and teamwork that bring buildings to life.
Each activity encouraged participants to think creatively, work collaboratively, and build confidence as they discovered just how diverse and rewarding construction can be.
Recognising Growth
To celebrate their participation, every student received a Certificate of Achievement, personally signed by Renee Preston. This recognition supports the students’ career development and provides a meaningful addition to their future CVs — a tangible reminder of what they accomplished on the day.
Creating Opportunities for Change
Reflecting on the event, Renee shared:
“Every taster day gives young women the opportunity to see construction through a new lens — one that’s full of creativity, leadership, and opportunity. It’s about opening doors early and showing them what’s truly possible.”
The Construction For Girls programme is a cornerstone of Construction For Women’s mission to increase gender diversity in construction. By connecting directly with schools and colleges, the initiative continues to inspire, educate, and empower young women to shape their own paths in this dynamic and evolving industry.
